The above list is an example of the very basic movement with the Bokken. Each student must be familiar with the seven Suburi, before going on to learn the Kumitachi. All students wanting to be examined for 3rd Kyu and above, should download the weapons grading syllabus. This will give an outline of what is required. I must point out, the weapons syllabus is only a basic requirement, and more would be required for each grading. You will find out during the weapon classes what other aspects are required. If the basic requirement is for filled during the grading, this might be enough to pass, although the variations are just as important.

Happo Giri
8 Direction cut.

This exercise consists of cutting in the full 8 directions of the walls and corners of the Dojo. Start with cutting the four walls in turn, then the four corners. Full control of the Bokken is required throughout, plus showing defence on each turn.

1st Kumitachi

Starting with Tori & Uke in basic kamae. Uke cuts towards Tori's head using Shomenuchi. Tori lunges forward trying to cut Uke across the chest from right to left, then moves to the left to a defensive posture. Uke continues with the Shomenuchi to the horizontal. Tori attacks Uke with a Shomenuchi cut on the left foot, Uke meets the Shomenuchi. Tori then counters this with another Shomenuchi cut on the right foot, to the horizontal position engaging the hip to deflect the cut to Tori's right.

I will update this page with more information as soon as possible.
