The above list is an example of the very basic movement with the Jo. Each student must be familiar with the 20 Jo Suburi, before going on to learn the Kumi Jo. All students wanting to be examined for 3rd Kyu and above, should download the weapons grading syllabus. This will give an outline of what is required. I must point out, the weapons syllabus is only a basic requirement, and more would be required for each grading. You will find out during the weapon classes what other aspects are required. If the basic requirement is for filled during the grading, this might be enough to pass, although the variations are just as important.

1st KumiJo

The beginning of the 1st KumiJo, is the same as the paired for the San Ju Ichi No kata. (31 Jo Kata) Uke Tsuki to Tori, and Tori moves to the left with a counter Tsuki. Uke uses the circular parry to knock Tori's Jo out of the way. Uke then Tsuki to Tori. Tori moves to the right in to the defensive position, resting the Jo underneath Uke's Jo. Tori strikes at Uke using Shomenuchi, and Uke counters knocking the Jo from Right to left. Uke then uses a Jodan tsuki towards Tori's face or elbow. Tori stepping onto the left foot, and stepping to the rear with the right foot, attacking Uke's head with a Shomenuchi cut.

I will update this page with more information as soon as possible.
